Alexander News
I want to thank all my Alexander area friends
and relatives who sent me cards and get well wishes during my recent
hospitalization. It was truly overwhelming!! I am now home from University
Hospitals in IA City where I had complete lower jaw replacement surgery due to
cancer of the jaw. Although my recovery will take some time, I am making
progress. Thanks, in part, to all the well wishes from friends and relatives
like you.
Thank you so much! Gary Dirksen
Last
week Pauline Arends, Marilyn Arends
and Alberta Bohman took a trip to Las Vegas. Bob and
Gloria Zangel invited all to their home for supper.
Those also attending were Andrew Arends, Steve and
Sharon Wilkinson and their children Tyler, Katrina and April.
Later
the “girls” took a tour of Hoover Dam and attended a couple of shows on the Las
Vegas strip.
The
parents of the junior class will be having a can drive to raise money for the
after prom festivities. They will be going to Alexander, Latimer and Coulter
Saturday, Feb. 27th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. If anyone is interested in donating
a bag or two or three of cans as a donation all they have to do is set the bags
out either on their drives or by the curb and we will have pick-ups coming
around to gather them. We would really like to thank anyone who would be
willing to help us out.
Plans
continue for the Alexander Quasquicentennial
celebration in June with our next meeting scheduled for Monday March 1 at 7
p.m. in the community center. We're holding an omelet breakfast fundraiser at
St. Francis Catholic Church on Sunday Feb. 28. We're looking for more parade
entries for our parade on June 19 and if you're interested, please call Rusty Bohman at 641-692-3578.

Our
Annual Alexander Library Soup Supper was another huge success! The library
trustees and staff laid out yet another tasty feast, with five different soups,
breads and crackers, bars upon bars, beverages and a host of helpful hands with
which to serve it all up in grand hometown style.
The
community room seemed to be full most of the evening, and artwork done by CAL
student Kayla Jensen could be viewed upstairs as customers waited their turn
for a chance at the meal. We had dozens of door prizes provided though various
means. Many local people donated items and a couple businesses featured some of
their wares for the benefit of the library and pleasure of the recipients. Be sure
and thank those who gave so generously when you see them!
We had
several great servers from the Northwest Franklin 4-H Club assist us throughout
the evening event. As always, these kids are quick to pitch in and contribute
much to the success of this fundraising event that benefits their library and
adds to the betterment of their community. We are proud to have them call our
community room their meeting place and home!
One
satisfied customer suggested, after taking in our supper and staying for more
time reading and fellowshipping, “You should do this EVERY Saturday night!”
Well, perhaps not. ..but we are delighted you had such
a great time among us!
Our
library continues to be a vital and vibrant resource to this town. We have two
Coffee Times each week for everyone to gather and stay connected. Once monthly
we have a nurse come and provide blood pressure checks and dispense health care
information during that time.
We
have two public computers for adults and students alike, and are wireless for
those who would like to bring their lap tops instead. Students have access to
the printers free of charge when homework is involved.
Our
book club, On the Same Page, will resume again shortly after this brief recess,
and provides ample opportunity for book lovers to share ideas, insights and
fellowship in a friendly family style.
We
offer a game table upstairs which many of our young people have utilized and
waged good-natured chess or checkers competitions over hot chocolate. We even
offer some card games for their pleasure, as well. If others would like to
bring in board games to share or donate, we will be more than tickled to offer
these to our valued young people. What a wonderful way and place to develop
social skills and gather amidst friends and community members!
We
allow our community room to be reserved for special events for the asking and
at no cost. Just contact one of our library personnel to line this up.
Our
site also provides opportunities for college students to take proctored exams
through NIACC, making higher education more easily attainable. Speak with us!
And
naturally we continue to provide a wide variety of reading materials, magazines
and newspapers, DVDs and family resources for the enjoyment and enrichment of
the community.
So,
come in soon and see where all those well-appreciated donations have been
allocated! Then…stay awhile!
